OAPEN Library: 40,000+ Free Open-Access Academic Books

OAPEN provides free access to a large international library of peer-reviewed open-access scholarly books. Its current homepage reports more than 40,000 books from over 450 participating publishers, covering more than 80 languages and generating more than 1.5 million monthly downloads. Readers can search by subject, publisher, collection, language or keyword and open an individual record to read or download the available full text.

The independent Dutch nonprofit says the infrastructure is free to use without payment or registration. That makes it a legitimate alternative to unauthorized textbook or academic-book downloads. Open access does not mean every title uses identical permissions: readers should still check the license and rights information attached to the individual book before reusing, translating or redistributing material. Coverage also depends on participating publishers and funders, so this is not a complete catalog of every academic title. Use OAPEN’s official search and book records rather than third-party mirrors, and verify the edition and license needed for research or teaching.
