MongoDB Atlas Free Cluster: 512MB Cloud Database That Never Expires

MongoDB Atlas currently includes a Free cluster tier for developers who want a hosted MongoDB environment for learning, prototypes, and small development workloads. MongoDB’s official deployment guide says Free clusters never expire. The current Atlas limits document allows one Free cluster per project and lists 0.5 GB of total data storage, which MongoDB also describes as roughly 512 MB in its setup guidance.

The Free tier is intentionally limited compared with paid Atlas clusters. MongoDB documents a ceiling of 100 read/write operations per second, no cloud backups on the Free cluster, restricted regions and features, and automatic pausing after 30 days without connections. Those constraints make the tier useful for tutorials, experiments, demos, and lightweight development, but not a substitute for a production database that needs guaranteed performance, backups, or advanced networking.

To use it, create an Atlas account, create a project, choose the Free cluster option, select one of the supported cloud regions, and configure a database user plus network access. Before deploying anything important, review the current Free-cluster limits and export data you cannot afford to lose.
