Free Course, Preview, Trial or Coupon? Coursera vs Udemy in 2026

A source-backed guide to the difference between Coursera previews and trials and Udemy free courses and instructor coupons, including the limits that matter.

Free Course, Preview, Trial or Coupon? Coursera vs Udemy in 2026
“Free course” can mean very different things on Coursera and Udemy, so the safest way to evaluate a learning deal is to identify what is actually free before clicking Enroll. On Coursera, the current free-learning pages say many courses let you preview the first module at no cost. That preview can include videos, readings and some assignments where available, but it is not a promise that the entire course or certificate is free. Coursera also promotes seven-day trials for eligible Specializations and Coursera Plus. A trial is different from a free preview because it unlocks broader content for a limited period and normally leads into a paid subscription if you do not cancel.

As of August 26, 2026, Coursera is also running a separate Coursera Plus promotion for new subscribers: US$35 per month for three months instead of US$59, with an expiry of September 23 at 11:59 p.m. UTC and an exclusion for residents of India. That discounted subscription should not be described as a free course.

Udemy uses another model. Its official free-course collection currently lists more than 450 courses whose native price is free. Udemy’s support page explains that those free-course enrollments use a simplified experience: new free enrollments do not include a certificate of completion, Q&A or direct messaging, and free courses may contain ads.

Udemy instructor coupons can create a different kind of “free” offer. Udemy says a Free: Open instructor coupon can allow up to 10 free enrollments or last five days, whichever comes first, while a Free: Targeted coupon can allow up to 100 enrollments or last 31 days. When those coupons expire, they become referral links and no longer control the price. Udemy also says referral links themselves do not influence the price shown to learners.

The practical DealVorio check is simple: verify the exact landing page today, separate a permanent free course from a temporary coupon, record the redemption or subscriber limits, and distinguish a preview from a trial. Before enrolling, confirm whether you receive the full curriculum, assessments, certificate, instructor features, and whether a payment method is captured for later renewal.

For Coursera, a button that says “Enroll for free” can still lead to a preview, financial-aid route or subscription choice depending on the program, so read the checkout screen rather than inferring the final cost from the button alone. For Udemy, confirm that the course page still shows a zero price or that a live coupon has actually reduced the checkout price before you rely on it.

This guide does not claim that every course on either platform is free. It explains how to tell the difference between the verified free-access mechanisms the platforms currently document. DealVorio rechecked the cited Coursera and Udemy sources on August 26, 2026.
